Springfield Gas Holds Steady as Diesel Rises on July 31

Regular gas prices barely moved in the Springfield metro on Friday, July 31, while diesel climbed more noticeably in the latest AAA price check.

AAA listed the Springfield metro average at $4.048 per gallon for regular gasoline, down from $4.049 on Thursday. Diesel averaged $5.406 per gallon, up from $5.385 the previous day.

Diesel is rising faster than gasoline

The weekly comparison shows the sharper movement in diesel. Regular gas was 2.7 cents higher than the $4.021 average reported a week earlier. Diesel was 12 cents higher than its $5.286 weekly comparison.

Compared with AAA’s July 29 check, regular gasoline is lower than the reported $4.06 level, while diesel is higher than the earlier $5.352 figure.

That difference matters most for businesses and workers who depend on diesel vehicles. Trucking companies, contractors, landscapers, delivery operators, waste haulers and service businesses generally have fewer practical options to avoid fuel use when diesel costs rise. Higher operating costs can eventually affect delivery charges, service pricing or the cost of moving materials, although the latest price data does not document specific local business reactions.

What the numbers mean for households

Gasoline remains a more direct expense for many Springfield-area commuters and households. The metro regular-gas average was 27 cents higher than the monthly comparison of $3.778 and $1.081 above the year-ago average of $2.967.

Diesel was also above its longer-term comparisons. AAA listed the monthly diesel average at $5.149 and the year-ago average at $3.778, putting Friday’s price 25.7 cents above the monthly figure and $1.628 above the year-ago level.

Those averages represent the Springfield metro market, not the price at every station. Individual pumps can vary based on location, competition, fuel grade and when the station last changed its price. Drivers may want to compare nearby stations before filling up, particularly before weekend travel, restaurant deliveries, event traffic or large household errands.

AAA’s statewide Massachusetts averages on Friday were $4.131 for regular gasoline and $5.467 for diesel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration‘s latest weekly Massachusetts data, released July 28, provides broader state context but is not a Springfield-specific daily measure.
