Lansing School District is accepting cross-district Schools of Choice applications for the 2026-27 school year through Aug. 28, 2026, giving families seeking enrollment outside their resident district a remaining application window before the school year.
The deadline applies to Schools of Choice applications under Michigan Sections 105 and 105c. Lansingโs district materials say applicants who miss the Aug. 28 deadline must obtain a state-aid release from their resident district before they can enroll.
Separate deadline for students entering Grade 9
The district listed a different deadline for students entering Grade 9: transfer requests were due Aug. 1 at 11:59 p.m. That deadline is separate from the Aug. 28 cross-district Schools of Choice application deadline.
Families should not treat the later deadline as a guarantee of a seat. The districtโs enrollment and magnet-school pages do not state how many seats remain at individual schools or how many applications have been received, and they do not guarantee placement for every eligible applicant.
Magnet options and enrollment rules
Lansing School District says its magnet-school system permits students to attend any district magnet school regardless of where they live, subject to the applicable eligibility rules. The magnet options are part of the districtโs enrollment choices alongside the cross-district application process.
The district says enrollment is governed by Michigan statutes including MCL 380.1401, 388.1606, 388.1705, 388.1705c and 388.1707. Its enrollment information also addresses special-education enrollment responsibilities and Michigan statutory requirements, though the district materials do not provide school-by-school capacity information.
The state-aid release requirement is part of a process that Lansing says it began implementing with the 2025-26 academic year. For families applying for the coming year, Aug. 28 is the next stated deadline in the districtโs materials; after that date, a release from the resident district is required before enrollment.
The published information identifies deadlines and procedures but does not list a next board meeting, a districtwide enrollment total, or a timeline for individual placement decisions. Families considering a magnet school or a cross-district transfer will need to meet the applicable deadline and follow the districtโs stated enrollment rules.
