Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi led 105 lawmakers in asking FBI Director Kash Patel to give potential hate-crime violations explicit attention in the investigation of an alleged plot involving Auroraโs Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Hindu temple. Their October 20 letter asks for a written response by October 29, to the extent consistent with the ongoing investigation.
That request is not confirmation that the FBI opened a hate-crime investigation. The letter asks whether the bureau is examining possible racial, ethnic or religious bias and coordinating with federal civil-rights authorities. It also seeks information about the investigationโs scope, not a new charge or a decision in the state case.
What the lawmakers want the FBI to address
The questions extend beyond whether investigators are considering bias. The lawmakers ask whether they are examining online communications, how the alleged target was selected and whether anyone else may have helped or coordinated. They also ask how the FBI distinguishes constitutionally protected expression from threats or conduct that warrants investigation.
The letter raises practical questions about how actionable threat information is shared with local agencies and potentially targeted houses of worship, what outreach and protective resources are available, and whether the FBI has enough personnel, language expertise and analytical capacity. It names Indian Americans, Hindu Americans, Sikhs and other South Asian communities in its broader inquiry about credible threats and protection.
The lawmakers argue that the alleged combination of racial hatred, a religious setting and preparations for mass violence warrants comprehensive federal attention. They also criticize federal messaging they say risks reinforcing racial or religious stereotypes; that is their stated concern, not a finding about what caused the alleged plot.
The letter and the state case are separate
The alleged plot occurred October 11. Alexandros Paporakis, 19, faces state charges, according to the Daily Heraldโs reporting. The information reported about the case does not establish a federal hate-crime charge or a finding that the alleged conduct legally qualifies as a hate crime. The lawmakersโ letter does not itself impose duties on the FBI or create new protections, and it does not change the status of the state case.
