Aurora Daily Brief: Firefighter Updates, Citizen Police Academy, and a Rare Sky Show

Aurora, IL — February 6, 2026 — Firefighter applicants hear back, a new Citizen Police Academy class opens, and residents may glimpse northern lights overnight.

Friday’s Local Snapshot

Here’s a look at what’s shaping the day in Aurora, from public safety updates to a rare bit of night-sky excitement across northern Illinois.

Firefighter applicants receive updates

The Aurora Fire Department notified firefighter candidates on February 5 about their application and exam status for the current hiring cycle. Eligible applicants now move into the preference points phase, which runs through February 22. A certified eligibility list is expected to be posted in March.

City officials say the process is part of long-term staffing planning as Aurora continues to grow and modernize emergency services.

Citizen Police Academy returns later this month

The Aurora Police Department will launch its next Citizen Police Academy on February 26 at police headquarters. The free program runs for eleven Thursday evenings and is open to adults who live, work, or study in Aurora.

Participants will get hands-on exposure to topics like traffic stops, drones, investigations, crisis intervention, and K-9 operations. Applications are due by February 22.

Northern lights may be visible in Illinois

A strong geomagnetic storm could bring a rare chance to see the northern lights as far south as Illinois late Thursday night into early Friday. Forecasters say the best viewing window is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., with darker skies improving visibility.

While sightings are never guaranteed, residents away from city lights may catch faint color bands low on the northern horizon.

Business investment approved this week

Aurora City Council approved a $3 million investment this week to support a newly consolidated economic development organization. The funding is intended to streamline support for local businesses and expand redevelopment efforts citywide.
