Bridgeport schools continue summer hiring push with about 50 vacancies before fall classes
Bridgeport Public Schools is continuing its summer teacher-recruitment effort with approximately 50 teaching vacancies reported in late July, ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
The district has scheduled open teacher interviews for Thursday, August 6, and Thursday, August 13, from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 324 at Bridgeport City Hall, 45 Lyon Terrace.
Elementary openings lead the vacancy count
The Connecticut Post reported July 28 that Bridgeport had about 50 open positions. District information cited in that report showed 13 vacancies at the elementary level, the largest reported category. Science, art and music were also identified as areas that have remained more difficult to fill.
The total is a late-July estimate, not a final count for the school year. The district said the number changes throughout the summer and that hiring progress is continuing.
Two of the approximately 50 openings were for special education teachers, according to district information reported by the Connecticut Post. The district said recruiting and retaining special education teachers remains a priority and that it has introduced incentives allowing eligible retired special education teachers to return while continuing to receive their pension.
Who can attend the open interviews
The districtโs open-interview notice invites certified teachers, DSAP candidates and educators with pending certification. Applicants are instructed to bring a resume.
DSAP refers to Connecticutโs alternate-route certification pathway. The interview sessions are part of the districtโs recruitment process; attending an interview does not represent a hiring decision or guarantee that a specific vacancy will be filled.
Bridgeport has used open interviews, targeted digital marketing and social media in its recruitment effort. The district also reported expanded partnerships with colleges and universities, as well as educator-preparation, teacher-residency and apprenticeship programs intended to strengthen its future hiring pipeline.
State support provides staffing context
The current recruitment push follows a period of staffing pressure. In its May 2026 Bridgeport education update, the Connecticut State Department of Education said state staff and an embedded technical-assistance team provided recruitment and hiring strategies that reduced certified-staff vacancies from more than 100 during summer 2025 to 41.
CSDE said its Bridgeport support began after the State Board of Education authorized the education commissioner on January 22, 2025, to address operational stability, student performance and other district needs. The department said the technical-assistance team was assembled on February 20, 2025.
That prior state-supported work is separate from the districtโs current summer recruitment activity, although both efforts address staffing capacity and hiring systems.
What the remaining openings mean
The vacancy estimate does not establish that particular classrooms will lack teachers when school begins. It does show that Bridgeportโs staffing plans remain subject to change as the district interviews candidates and makes additional hires through August.
Prospective applicants can attend either scheduled session at Bridgeport City Hall. They should bring a resume and review the districtโs hiring information before arriving. Families and school employees should expect the reported vacancy number to change as recruitment continues.
