Brownsville activates new curve-warning system on E. Price Road

Brownsville activated a new curve-warning system July 27 on E. Price Road between Crowndridge Drive and Land O Lakes Boulevard, giving drivers an illuminated alert as they approach and move through the curve.

The solar-powered system was installed by the City of Brownsville Engineering and Public Works Department’s Traffic Division. The city says the equipment is intended to provide earlier visual notification of the curve and help guide motorists through it.

The installation replaces traditional chevron alignment signs with illuminated warning signs that use a sequential flashing pattern. The sequence is designed to draw attention to the curve before drivers reach it and continue guiding them through the roadway section.

The system is a curve warning, not a traffic light, stop signal or intersection-control device. Drivers should continue to follow the posted warnings and roadway conditions while traveling on E. Price Road.

Installation follows earlier safety concerns

The project follows prior local reporting about crashes near Price Road and Crowndridge Drive, which KRGV spelled “Crownridge Drive” in its February 2025 report. KRGV reported that a Brownsville family requested additional traffic controls after a vehicle crashed into the home on February 11, 2025. The report also noted that a car had crashed into the house in 2017.

KRGV reported that the city was studying possible safety measures in the area, including flashing lights, reflective dots or illumination. Brownsville’s newer announcement identifies the activated project as a Sequential Dynamic Curve Warning System; it does not establish that the installation is identical to every option discussed previously.

The city announcement describes the system’s design and intended safety purpose and cites Federal Highway Administration research. The city says research on these systems has found crash reductions of 15% to 60% on horizontal curves and speed reductions of up to 26%, but those figures are broader research findings, not measurements from E. Price Road.

The confirmed development is the activation of the warning device and its location, not a completed evaluation of its effect on driving behavior or collision rates.
