Brownsville Sets 2026-28 Schedule for Municipal Complex Renovation
Brownsville has announced a phased renovation and departmental relocation schedule for a nearly 100,000-square-foot municipal complex that serves police, fire and EMS, emergency management, cybersecurity and other city functions.
The work is scheduled to begin in December 2026 and continue through March 2028. The city says residents should expect advance notices about temporary office locations, changes to public access and changes in how departments operate before each construction phase begins.
The project affects facilities used by the Brownsville Police Department, Brownsville Fire and EMS, the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Information Technology and Cybersecurity, and other municipal departments. The Brownsville City Employees Credit Union and the United States Postal Service are also identified among the entities associated with the complex.
A floor-by-floor construction schedule
According to the city’s schedule, construction on the fifth floor is set for December 2026 through March 2027. Work on the fourth floor is scheduled for March through June 2027.
The second-floor phase is scheduled for May through August 2027, followed by work on the third floor from August through November 2027. The final listed phase, covering the first floor, is scheduled for November 2027 through March 2028.
The schedule overlaps in places, with work on the fourth and second floors listed during portions of the same period. The city’s announcement presents the work as a phased renovation and relocation plan rather than a single closure of the complex.
What residents may need to watch
The project will reorganize how residents reach Brownsville’s public-safety, emergency-management, technology and other municipal departments while construction proceeds. The city has not reported that services will be interrupted, but it says temporary office locations, public-access changes and department-operation changes will be announced ahead of each phase.
That advance notice will be important for people who need to visit a department in person, contact a public-safety office or conduct other city business during the renovation. The locations and access rules may change as different floors are moved into construction.
The complex is a two-story facility, while the city’s schedule identifies work by five floor phases. The announcement does not describe the project as construction of a new headquarters; it describes a modernization and renovation effort intended to consolidate emergency, administrative and support functions.
