Brownsville Data-Center Hearing Outcome Remains Unclear

A proposal to convert a former Walmart building near the Port of Brownsville into a data center remains unresolved in the city’s publicly posted records. The site is a 32-acre lot with a 265,000-square-foot former Walmart building, near the port and Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

The developer’s application was scheduled for a public hearing before the Brownsville Planning and Zoning Commission on Aug. 6, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at Brownsville City Hall. The city maintains an online archive of the commission’s agendas, minutes and related records.

That archive does not identify whether the hearing occurred or whether the application was approved, denied, continued or modified. It also does not identify final conditions, the project’s investment, expected electricity demand, job count or construction schedule. The proposal therefore should not be described as approved, under construction or financially committed.

The documented next step was consideration by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Any action, revised plan or additional project details would need to appear in a later city record or filing before the project’s status and scope can be confirmed.
