Brownsville’s Norton Drive bridge closure begins, with detours planned through September
Norton Drive is closed to through traffic between Minnesota Avenue and Morningside Road as crews carry out a Texas Department of Transportation bridge replacement project in Brownsville.
The closure began Monday, July 27, 2026. The City of Brownsville expects it to remain in place through Sept. 17, but that is an expected end date rather than a guarantee that work or traffic restrictions will end on schedule.
What is closed
The affected stretch is Norton Drive between Minnesota Avenue and Morningside Road. Through traffic is restricted while crews complete the bridge replacement work.
The city’s Traffic Division announced the closure July 24 and said detours would be in place during the project.
What drivers should do
Motorists should follow posted detour signs, use caution near the work zone and allow additional travel time. The city is also encouraging drivers to avoid the area whenever possible to help reduce congestion and protect construction crews and people traveling through the area.
The city notice does not provide a specific added travel-time estimate, so conditions may vary by route, time of day and construction activity.
Related bridge-project context
Earlier KRGV reporting on a separate, related Minnesota Avenue bridge project said TxDOT had designated a two-mile detour through Norton Drive, Morningside Road, Southmost Avenue and California Road.
That earlier route provides context for bridge work in the area, but it does not confirm that the same route is the current posted detour for the Norton Drive closure. Drivers should rely on signs at the work zone and any newer instructions from the city or TxDOT.
The current Norton Drive closure is tied to TxDOT bridge replacement work. The city’s expected timeline runs through Sept. 17, unless project conditions, traffic plans or later official updates change it.
