Chesapeake Daily Local Headlines: Toll vote, overnight outages, and snow-delay ripple effects
Chesapeake’s week brought a reminder that transportation and basic services can shift fast—sometimes in the same 24 hours.
1) Dominion Boulevard and Chesapeake Expressway toll changes get a close vote
City Council approved changes to certain toll rates in a 5-4 vote at its Tuesday meeting. The biggest immediate takeaway for everyday drivers: using E-ZPass remains the cheapest way through the Dominion Boulevard Veterans Bridge, while pay-by-plate charges are set to jump.
Under the approved ordinance, tolls billed by license plate on Dominion Boulevard will be priced at three times the E-ZPass rate starting July 1. Council also approved changes tied to the southern segment of the Chesapeake Expressway’s discount program, including a higher annual enrollment fee and adjusted peak-weekend pricing beginning May 1, ahead of the summer travel season.
2) Overnight power outages hit parts of Chesapeake, then service returns
More than 7,000 Dominion Energy customers in Chesapeake were reported without power overnight in two separate outages, affecting areas around Butts Station and Kempsville roads south toward Volvo Parkway and parts of Greenbrier. By early Wednesday morning, power was restored in both outage areas, and the utility listed the cause as under investigation.
If you rely on medical devices, work-from-home connectivity, or small-business refrigeration, this is a good moment to double-check backup plans—chargers, flashlights, and how to report an outage quickly.
3) Snow-driven schedule changes lingered into Monday’s commute
After another round of winter weather in Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Public Schools operated on a two-hour delay Monday, February 23, as agencies and school divisions adjusted for road conditions. For families, the patchwork of delays and closures across the region underscored how quickly plans can change when snow and refreeze are in the forecast.
