City-run food pantry launches at the Civic Center Library
Chula Vista has teamed up with Catholic Charities to stand up what city officials describe as the South Bay’s first city-run food pantry. The pantry is based at the Civic Center branch of the Chula Vista Public Library (365 F St.) and is designed to offer staples and other essentials for residents facing food insecurity.
While the ribbon-cutting happened this week, the city says regular operations begin March 4, with hours Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m. Registration is required, and the pantry is meant to be a steady, repeat option rather than a one-time distribution.
New leadership for engineering and capital projects
The city also announced the appointment of Luis Schaar as director of engineering and capital projects. Chula Vista is positioning the hire as a boost for long-range infrastructure planning and delivery, from street and transportation upgrades to water, sewer and stormwater work.
Schaar comes with decades of experience in public-works design and construction, including work on major regional projects, and will be stepping into a department that touches many of the improvements residents feel most directly in their daily commute and neighborhood safety.
Walk a Dog Day recap: volunteers turn out, adoptions follow
Animal Services marked National Walk Your Dog Day with its second annual Walk a Dog Day at the city’s Animal Care Facility on Beyer Way. The city reports more than 600 volunteers signed up to walk shelter dogs and help with enrichment and socialization.
The event also translated into outcomes for pets: the city says four dogs were adopted and three entered foster-to-adopt homes. Staff encouraged residents to keep the momentum going through volunteering, fostering and donations.
