Greensboro Daily Headlines: Downtown housing plans, reappraisal worries, and road work
Greensboro, NC – March 4, 2026 – City Council actions, road closures, downtown parking-deck redevelopment plans, and a multi-county chase ending in town.
Downtown development: Davie Street deck eyed for apartments
Downtown leaders on March 4 announced a plan to take down the Davie Street Parking Deck and replace it with a seven-story apartment building with about 170 units, plus ground-floor retail. The update was shared during the annual State of Downtown presentation, where speakers framed more housing as a key piece of keeping downtown active beyond office hours.
The proposal is still early, but it is a notable next step for a structure that has long shaped traffic, parking, and street life around North Davie Street.
Property reappraisals spark tax anxiety
At the March 3 City Council meeting, residents urged leaders to avoid turning this year’s countywide property reappraisal into higher tax bills. Officials have said total assessed values in Guilford County could rise by more than 40% on average, a jump that worries both homeowners and renters as costs keep climbing.
City leaders said budget talks have not started yet, but the concerns are now firmly on the radar. County records show residents have until May 15 to appeal their new assessed value.
Heads up, drivers: Battleground Avenue lane closures set for March 9
The city says motorists should expect temporary lane closures on Monday, March 9, in the 2300 block of Battleground Avenue. Work is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the center lane closed and traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the work zone. As always, the schedule may shift with weather or operational needs.
Public safety: multi-county chase ends in Greensboro
A Virginia man was arrested after a multi-county chase in a U-Haul ended on Greensboro’s west side late March 2. Authorities say stop sticks were used to disable the truck, and the driver was taken into custody near Highway 29 and Guilford College Road. The case includes multiple charges, including fleeing to elude and impaired driving.
