Officer-involved shooting under investigation
Greensboro police are investigating an early-Thursday incident that began as a domestic disturbance call and escalated into gunfire. Police said officers responded to Orchard Street just after midnight, located a suspect, and reported the suspect fired at officers before fleeing in a vehicle.
Police said shots were fired again during a brief pursuit, and the suspect later returned to the area and continued firing. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was taken to a hospital. No officers were reported injured, and the involved officers were placed on administrative duty while reviews proceed.
Downtown adds a new live entertainment spot
A new venue called The Pyrle is opening in downtown Greensboro in the revitalized former Triad Stage building on South Elm Street. The venue is billed as a 1,000-capacity space aimed at bringing touring artists and other programming to the center city.
Organizers say it will also host comedy, film nights, watch parties for live-streamed events, and private rentals, with an eye toward boosting nearby restaurants and bars on show nights.
Traffic: I-40 backups after Friday crash
Drivers saw backups on I-40 East Friday morning after a crash closed a lane near Exit 221 by South Elm-Eugene Street. Transportation officials later cleared the incident, but congestion lingered as traffic caught up.
Quick consumer heads-up: tax refund text scam
State revenue officials are reminding residents that they do not contact taxpayers about refunds by text message. If you receive a refund-related text with a link asking for payment details or warning about forfeiture, the guidance is to avoid the link and delete the message.
