Huntsville, AL – February 27, 2026 – A quick roundup: HPD-FBI task force vote, Randolph School extortion probe, $5.5M for city schools, and Front Row leasing.
Top of mind
Huntsville is heading into the weekend with a mix of public-safety steps, school-related updates, and another downtown development milestone. Here are the local headlines worth your attention.
Public safety and investigations
City leaders were set to consider a formal agreement that would tighten coordination between the Huntsville Police Department and the FBI in support of HPD’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force. The proposed memorandum focuses on information-sharing, joint investigations, and stronger digital-forensics support for cases that often cross city and state lines.
Separately, Randolph School closed on Thursday as it reviewed a reported financial extortion scam involving threatening emails directed at a faculty member and later expanded to a small number of parents. Police said investigators have not found evidence the threats are credible, and the department’s cyber-focused unit is working the case.
Schools and city funding
At a City Council meeting, Mayor Tommy Battle presented Huntsville City Schools a check totaling about $5.55 million tied to the closure of three Tax Increment Financing districts. City officials said the revenue reflects private investment and growth inside those districts, and that future tax collections will continue flowing to schools and other local recipients as the areas mature.
Downtown development watch
Pre-leasing has begun for The Residences at Front Row, part of the mixed-use project rising in downtown Huntsville near the Von Braun Center. Developers say the first move-ins are targeted for June 2026, putting new housing options in the heart of the city’s ongoing redevelopment push.
