Irving Daily Brief: In-custody death identified, DART debate continues, brush fire contained

Irving, TX – March 4, 2026 – In-custody death identified, DART debate shifts, and firefighters stop a brush fire near Oak Lea Drive in Irving.

Here’s what Irving residents are watching today, from a developing public-safety investigation to regional transit decisions that could ripple across daily commutes.

Public safety: Man identified after in-custody death

A 48-year-old man has been identified as Homer Joel Cortez in connection with a recent in-custody death tied to an Irving traffic stop. Investigators say officers initiated a stop the evening of Feb. 24 near North Belt Line Road and Cross Country Trail, and an arrest attempt followed for suspected narcotics possession.

Police say a struggle occurred during the arrest and Cortez was later transported to the hospital, where he died. Irving police and the Dallas County public integrity unit are investigating.

Transit: DART withdrawal elections remain a live issue

Even after Irving’s City Council moved to cancel its own DART withdrawal vote last week, the broader debate is still unfolding across the region. In the Park Cities, faith leaders are publicly urging support for DART ahead of May 2 elections there, warning that service cuts can hit working families, people with disabilities, and other riders who rely on transit to reach jobs and services.

For Irving, the immediate ballot question may be off the table, but the conversation around funding, service levels, and long-term regional coordination is clearly not going away.

Fire call: Brush fire contained near Oak Lea Drive

Irving firefighters knocked down a brush fire along railroad tracks near the 1700 block of Oak Lea Drive (near E. Grauwyler Road) on the morning of March 1. Officials said crews contained the flames before they spread to nearby homes, and no injuries were reported. The cause has not been released.

Around town

The Inflatable Roadshow continues today (March 4) at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas, with the show floor scheduled to be open during the day. Looking ahead, the Irving Marathon weekend returns to Las Colinas March 28–29, with events centered near Toyota Music Factory.
