Miami Advances Smart Parking Plan, Transit Upgrades and Key Civic Events
Miami, FL – March 12, 2026 – County leaders move ahead on smart parking citations, transit upgrades, and major March events across the city.
Miami is moving through a busy stretch of civic decisions and spring events as March gets underway.
Smart Parking Citations Move Forward
Miami-Dade commissioners have advanced legislation that would allow parking enforcement officers to issue certain citations by mail, rather than placing tickets on windshields. The proposal is aimed largely at managing violations in newly created smart loading zones in downtown Miami.
County leaders say the change reflects the rise in food delivery services, rideshare traffic and short-term stops that can clog curbside space. A final hearing is expected later this month.
$6.2M Transit Control Upgrade Under Review
A county committee is also considering a $6.2 million contract to upgrade the centralized control system that operates Metrorail and Metromover. The system connects rail operations, station communications, public address announcements and safety functions across more than 20 stations.
Officials were told that upgrading the current system would be more cost-effective than replacing it entirely, helping maintain reliability across Miami-Dade’s transit network.
Combined City Commission Meeting Today
At Miami City Hall, today’s City Commission meeting combines both the March 12 and March 26 sessions into a single agenda. The meeting began at 9 a.m. and includes opportunities for in-person and online public comment.
Residents can follow proceedings live through the city’s broadcast platforms.
Miami Youth Fair Kicks Off
On the community side, the Miami Youth Fair opens today at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds and runs through April 5. The annual event brings rides, food vendors, student exhibits and live entertainment, marking one of the region’s signature spring traditions.
Warm Weather Ahead
Forecasters are also watching for unseasonably warm temperatures across South Florida this week, with highs climbing into the 80s and the potential for record heat before rain chances increase.
