Naperville 203 Starts Work on Fifth Avenue Transportation Facility

Naperville Community Unit School District 203 says construction is underway on a new transportation facility at its Fifth Avenue site, beginning a project intended to replace the district’s aging transportation operation.

Crews are clearing the site and laying the foundation for the building, according to the district. The facility is planned to provide a new home for transportation functions that had been operating under a temporary lease arrangement secured through July 2026.

The work is a significant school-infrastructure project in Naperville because it addresses the district’s bus operations, including space for vehicle maintenance and parking. Design includes geothermal and solar systems

District 203 said its planning process included input from district leaders, bus drivers and mechanics. The district selected a sustainability-focused design using geothermal-powered mechanical systems and a full rooftop solar array.

The district projects that the additional investment in geothermal and solar systems will have a six-year payback. That is a projection for the added sustainability features, not a report that the payback has already been achieved.
