North Las Vegas is closing out February with a mix of public-safety developments and a new effort aimed at a long-running community need: staffing local classrooms. Here are the key updates to know heading into the weekend.

1) Arrest in deadly weekend shooting near Camino Al Norte

Police say a suspect was booked on an open murder charge after a shooting early Saturday, Feb. 21, in the 4800 block of Camino Al Norte. Investigators say the victim was taken to a hospital and later died Wednesday, Feb. 25. Detectives are still asking anyone with information to contact police or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

2) Canyon Springs launches a ‘homegrown’ teacher pipeline

A new program at Canyon Springs High School is offering students a fast start toward teaching careers, including college credits, scholarships, classroom experience and a dedicated career coach. In exchange, students commit to returning to work in local schools after completing their education. Supporters say the goal is simple: grow educators from the community and keep them here.

3) Multiple arrests reported after overnight carjacking

Police say a victim reported being assaulted and having a white Dodge Charger taken during a carjacking in the 600 block of East Owens Avenue. Authorities later located the vehicle near Gowan Road and Civic Center Drive, recovered it, and took multiple people into custody in connection with the incident.
