North Las Vegas road work starts on Las Vegas Boulevard North, with lane shifts beginning April 8

Construction is now underway on Las Vegas Boulevard North in North Las Vegas, and the first major traffic change starts Wednesday, April 8.

The city says the $38 million Las Vegas Boulevard North Improvement project began Monday, April 6, along the corridor between East Tonopah Avenue and East Carey Avenue. For drivers, the immediate change is not a full shutdown. Las Vegas Boulevard North is staying open during construction, but lane closures and traffic shifts are beginning right away.

What changes this week

The first staged traffic shift starts April 8, when vehicles will be moved to the southbound side of Las Vegas Boulevard North from North Bruce Street to East Carey Avenue. City officials said that setup is expected to stay in place for about one month.

That means daily corridor users should plan for slower trips, tighter traffic patterns and possible backups, especially during commute periods and around active work zones. FOX5 Vegas also reported that drivers are being encouraged to use alternate routes where possible.

For nearby businesses, the practical issue is disruption rather than closure. The road remains open, but customers, deliveries and employees may have to navigate changing lanes and a longer construction window than a routine resurfacing job.

This project goes deeper than paving

The city says the work includes upgraded storm drainage, modernized underground utilities and new pavement. That matters because it signals a full corridor rebuild, not just a cosmetic road overlay.

Storm drainage work is especially important on older arterial streets, where flooding, ponding and road wear can create recurring problems during heavy rain. Underground utility upgrades also tend to make projects more complex and slower moving, since crews are working below the surface before the final pavement goes down.

How long it will last

City officials say construction is expected to take about 18 months. Normal work hours are scheduled for 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The project is being funded by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. City budget documents show the Tonopah-to-Carey segment has been part of the city’s adopted capital planning, which helps explain the size of the investment and the multi-year construction horizon.
