Fatal Shooting at Omaha Target Store
On February 2, 2026, a suspect opened fire inside the Target store at 17810 West Center Road, Omaha. The individual, identified as Joseph Jones, 32, of suburban Omaha, had purchased the AR-15-style rifle used in the incident just four days prior. Shoppers and employees fled the store as Jones fired several rounds. Responding officers confronted Jones, who was subsequently shot and killed by Officer Brian Vanderheiden. No other injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation, with Officer Vanderheiden placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
Downtown Omaha High-Rise Apartment Project Advances
A proposed high-rise multi-family development in downtown Omaha is moving forward. The project, announced in 2024 by NuStyle Development in collaboration with the Omaha Children’s Museum and the City of Omaha, aims to transform a 6-acre site at 8th & Douglas Street. Despite challenges, including an Interstate 480 on-ramp cutting through the property, plans for the apartment building are progressing. The Omaha Children’s Museum had initially planned a new facility on the site but paused fundraising in November 2025. The city is also considering parking facilities to support the development and nearby attractions.
Remembering Omaha’s Historic Boyd’s Theater and Opera House
Omaha’s Boyd’s Theater and Opera House, located at 1621 Harney Street, was a significant cultural venue from its opening in 1891 until its closure in 1920. The theater hosted numerous performances and was a central part of Omaha’s entertainment scene. After its closure, the building was demolished, and the site was redeveloped for the Burgess-Nash Co. department store. The legacy of Boyd’s Theater continues to be remembered as a landmark in Omaha’s history.
