Providence opens first round of two-year, $700,000 facilities program
Providence has opened the first application round for a cultural facilities program totaling $700,000 over two fiscal years, part of $750,000 in grant programs announced by Mayor Brett P. Smiley and the cityโs Department of Art, Culture and Tourism on Oct. 16, 2026. The facilities round closes Nov. 16.
The facilities money is divided evenly: $350,000 in fiscal 2027 and $350,000 in fiscal 2028. The city says the funding is tied to allocations from its 2020 and 2025 capital improvement bonds. The separate Cultural Festival Grant Fund makes $50,000 available through fiscal 2027, with applications scheduled to open Nov. 15.
Facilities grants target public cultural venues
Registered nonprofits may apply if they own a qualifying venue or hold a qualifying long-term lease. The venue must be a public cultural space in Providence dedicated to presenting or teaching arts. Projects must improve spaces used by artists, students or audiences, and the improvements must last at least five years. Administrative offices not available to those groups are excluded.
Most facilities awards are expected to range from $25,000 to $100,000, though applicants may request less or more. No matching funds are required. Organizations that received a combined $100,000 or more in city grants, subsidies or contracts during fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026 are ineligible.
The first application round opened Oct. 16. The city also listed an online information session for the facilities program on Oct. 30.
Festival fund has separate eligibility rules
The festival fund offers requests of $1,500 to $4,000 for qualifying cultural festivals held in Providence by June 30, 2027. Festivals must be free and accessible to the public, have a total budget above $8,000, have no religious affiliation and obtain required city special-event permits.
The city announcement requires an annual event history but gives no specific threshold. ACTโs festival page describes the requirement as a โminimum of 3-5+ consecutive years,โ wording that does not establish a precise number of years.
Festival applications are scheduled to be accepted on a rolling basis from Nov. 15, 2026, through May 15, 2027. Eligible expenses may be supported retroactively, subject to program guidelines. The city listed an online information session for the festival program on Oct. 28.
The Department of Art, Culture and Tourism will administer both programs. They create application opportunities for eligible venues and festival organizers; the announcement does not name grant recipients.
