Providence-Area Gas Eases as Diesel Hits $5.39 in AAA Check
Providence-area regular gas eased to $4.107 per gallon in AAA’s July 31 metro check, while diesel climbed to $5.390, increasing pressure on commercial fleets.
Regular gasoline eased in the Providence-Fall River-Warwick metro area on July 31, 2026, while diesel moved higher, creating a split fuel-price trend for Providence-area drivers, households and businesses.
AAA listed the metro average for regular gasoline at $4.107 per gallon. That was down 0.3 cents from the previous day and 0.6 cents from the prior week. It was also below the previous check, when regular gas averaged $4.117.
Diesel moved higher
Diesel averaged $5.390 per gallon in the Providence-Fall River-Warwick metro area. The price increased 2.4 cents from the previous day and 10.1 cents from the prior week. The previous check listed diesel at $5.367.
The increase matters most directly for delivery fleets, contractors, landscapers, freight operators, service companies and other businesses that rely on diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Fuel is a recurring operating cost for companies making frequent service calls, moving supplies or transporting goods around Providence and surrounding communities.
For commuters and households using regular gasoline, the small daily and weekly decline offers limited relief. AAA’s comparison table listed regular gasoline at $3.796 one month earlier and $3.022 one year earlier. Diesel was listed at $4.971 one month earlier and $3.822 one year earlier.
National prices also moved higher
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 29 Weekly Petroleum Status Report listed the national average at $4.096 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.313 for on-highway diesel on July 27. Regular gasoline was up 9.5 cents from the prior week, while diesel was up 17.9 cents.
Those national figures provide broader context, but they do not replace the Providence-area metro average. Individual station prices can vary by neighborhood, brand and local competition, so the AAA figure should not be read as the price at every Providence pump.
For weekend travelers, the slight gasoline decline may trim a small amount from fill-up costs. For diesel-dependent businesses, the sharper increase is the more immediate concern because it affects deliveries, construction work, service calls and other local activity.
