South Boulevard southbound closure July 13–Aug. 14, plus Blue Line changes
Charlotte NC – Southbound South Boulevard closes July 13–Aug. 14 between Clanton Rd and Old Pineville Rd as the city and CATS do Blue Line drainage work.
Charlotte residents in south Charlotte should plan for a major traffic slowdown starting Monday, July 13: the City of Charlotte says the southbound lanes of South Boulevard will be closed between Clanton Road and Old Pineville Road for about four weeks while crews do drainage improvements at a Blue Line crossing south of Scaleybark Station. The same work triggers a Blue Line single-tracking schedule that changes rider boarding instructions during two different date ranges.
What’s closing—and why
The City of Charlotte says the southbound lanes of South Boulevard will be closed between Clanton Road and Old Pineville Road starting Monday, July 13, 2026, with the timing set through Friday, Aug. 14, 2026.
The closure is tied to drainage improvements at the Blue Line crossing south of Scaleybark Station, according to the City’s notice.
Driver impacts and the detour plan
For the full closure window (July 13 through Aug. 14), the City directs drivers toward a southbound detour routed from Clanton Road to Tryon Street to Woodlawn Road and then back to South Boulevard.
Because street-work details can update day to day, the City points residents to its interactive street-closure map for the most current information. The City also says the closure information populates into Waze and is updated daily.
LYNX Blue Line rider impacts: single-tracking and different boarding rules
With the work affecting the light-rail corridor, Blue Line service will be adjusted to single-track between four stations: Archdale, Tyvola, Woodlawn, and Scaleybark.
What changes is which platform riders should use—and that differs by date range:
- July 13 to July 26, 2026: Trains single track between Archdale, Tyvola, Woodlawn and Scaleybark. Board all trains from the northbound platform at those stations. Directional signage will be placed at these stations.
- July 27 to Aug. 9, 2026: Trains continue single tracking between the same four stations. Board all trains from the southbound platform at those stations. Directional signage will be placed at these stations.
The City also says customers should contact CATS Customer Service at 704-336-RIDE (7433) if they have questions or need support.
Quick planning checklist before you leave
- For driving: If you use southbound South Boulevard between Clanton Road and Old Pineville Road, plan for delays and the posted detour.
- For rail trips: Check your date. The boarding platform direction for single-tracking changes between the July 13–26 and July 27–Aug. 9 periods.
- For day-of updates: Use the City’s interactive closure map (and Waze, since the City says it is updated daily).
The bottom line: expect disruption on South Boulevard and along the Blue Line corridor starting July 13—and minimize last-minute surprises by confirming your road route and your Blue Line boarding platform before heading out.
