Sunnyvale Approves $8.36 Million Citywide Microtransit Service

Sunnyvale is moving ahead with a new citywide, on-demand transit service after the City Council authorized an $8,358,000 service order with Via Transportation, Inc., doing business as Nomad Transit LLC.

The council action on Feb. 25 also approved a $5,096,000 budget modification for the Sunnyvale Microtransit Service and authorized the city manager to execute related agreements. The decision commits the city to the next phase of implementing a transportation program intended to provide on-demand service across Sunnyvale.

The action does not mean the service has launched. The city’s official record does not provide a firm public launch date. The next major step is implementation of the service, including the operational work needed before rides begin.

How the transition will work

Sunnyvale’s existing Peery Park Rides shuttle is expected to continue operating alongside the new citywide service for approximately six months after the microtransit launch.

That parallel period creates a transition between the current business-district shuttle and the broader on-demand system. The council authorization identifies both services as operating at the same time during the initial period, but it does not establish that Peery Park Rides will be permanently replaced.

The citywide program is designed around on-demand transportation rather than a conventional fixed-route expansion. The approved service order names Via Transportation as the contractor, operating under the business name Nomad Transit LLC. The city manager’s authority to sign related agreements allows the city to complete the arrangements tied to the approved service.

The $8.358 million figure is the authorized service order. Separately, the council approved a $5.096 million budget modification for the service. Those figures describe the immediate action taken by the council and should not be confused with the city’s longer-term operating projection.

Sunnyvale’s fiscal 2026-27 budget materials describe an additional $26.7 million in funding to operate the new microtransit shuttle over 20 years. That longer-term amount places the new service within the city’s multiyear transportation and mobility planning. It is not the immediate value of the approved service order.
