Sunnyvale’s Historic Investment in Affordable Housing
Sunnyvale’s City Council has approved nearly $30 million in funding to construct 600 new affordable homes for individuals experiencing homelessness. This substantial investment is the largest award of Housing Mitigation Funds in the city’s history and aims to leverage over $480 million in additional public and private financing.
Details of the Funding Allocation
- 1171 Sonora Court: $14,033,000 allocated for 170 affordable units, with construction projected to begin in 2028.
- 352 East Java Drive: $14,000,000 designated for 305 affordable units, with construction expected to start in 2026.

Mayor Larry Klein emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This significant investment in affordable housing will serve a range of needs in our community.” The projects are expected to provide much-needed housing solutions for the unhoused population in Sunnyvale.
Community Impact
The funding is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness and provide stable housing options. By partnering with developers and leveraging additional financing, Sunnyvale aims to create sustainable and supportive housing communities for its residents.
Looking Ahead
As construction progresses, the city plans to monitor the impact of these developments on the community and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the success of the affordable housing projects.
