Worcester Daily Brief: Parking ban lifted, Railers edged at DCU Center, WPI’s tourney run ends
Worcester, MA – March 1, 2026 – Parking ban rules reset after the storm, Railers drop a 2-1 heartbreaker, and WPI’s tourney run ends in a semifinal.
Worcester is settling back into routine after the late-week storm, while local sports packed plenty of drama into the weekend.
Winter parking ban lifted, but overnight rules stay in place
City officials lifted Worcester’s winter weather emergency and the declared winter parking ban at 5 p.m. on Friday. If you moved your car into a municipal garage during the ban, the city said you had until noon Saturday to exit without charge.
Snow removal work continued into Friday evening, and residents were asked not to block crews as streets are widened and corners get cleared out. The city also reminded everyone that the permanent winter parking ban remains in effect through April 30 on designated emergency arteries, key bus routes, and other priority streets, including the 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. overnight restrictions on affected roadways.
Sidewalks were also a focus: the city reiterated that property owners and occupants are responsible for clearing and treating adjacent sidewalks within 10 hours after snowfall ends, including curb ramps at crosswalks.
Railers fall 2-1 as opponent’s streak grows
At the DCU Center on Saturday night, Worcester’s pro hockey club dropped a tight 2-1 game after taking a first-period lead. The visitors answered with two quick goals early in the second and held on through a busy third period to extend a long winning streak.
For Worcester, it was the kind of one-goal result that can swing a season’s momentum, especially with the standings tightening. The team is back home again Sunday afternoon.
WPI men’s basketball upset in conference semifinals
On the college side, WPI’s men saw their conference title push end Friday night in Worcester. The top seed fell 82-60 in the tournament semifinals, with the game turning after a competitive first half.
It’s a tough finish for a team that had been rolling for much of the winter, but the program’s bigger-picture trajectory still looks strong heading into the offseason.
