Worcester sends smart-glasses policy proposal for further review
The Worcester School Committee referred a proposed restriction on some smart glasses and similar wearable devices to its Standing Committee on Operations and Governance at its Oct. 8, 2026, meeting. The proposal was not adopted, and no new restriction took effect through the referral.
The committee sent the proposal for further discussion before it returns to the full committee for a vote, Boston 25 News reported. The Worcester Guardian also reported the referral. The Worcester School Committee met at City Hall in Worcester on Oct. 8, according to the district calendar.
What the draft would restrict
As described in reporting by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the proposed language would cover smart glasses and similar wearable technology in Worcester Public Schools facilities if the devices can discreetly record audio, video or images, or access information that could compromise academic integrity. The reported draft says unauthorized recording would be prohibited.
The draft also describes possible exceptions for a documented medical need or disability, or when the district expressly authorizes use. Those are terms reported from the proposal, not confirmed provisions of an adopted policy. The proposal remains pending, so its final wording, if approved, could depend on later committee action.
Concerns and next steps
Vice Chair Molly McCullough cited the possibility that students could use connected glasses to access online tools during tests or record people without their knowledge. WHDH and the Telegram & Gazette reported that McCullough said she was not aware of documented improper-use incidents in Worcester Public Schools. The proposal was presented as preventive, rather than as a response to a reported incident in the district.
Public comments reported by local outlets reflected individual views, not a districtwide consensus. Worcester resident Christine Church expressed concern about privacy and favored caution, Boston 25 News reported. WHDH also reported a parentโs view that the glasses might not be common because of their cost.
Reporting says the proposal is expected to return to the full committee for a vote after further subcommittee discussion. The district calendar lists an Operations and Governance meeting on Oct. 13 and the next regular School Committee meeting on Oct. 22, but neither date has been confirmed as the date this proposal will be heard. Until the committee takes further action, the referral itself does not restrict studentsโ use of the devices.
