Charlotte appoints Rob Harrington to serve as mayor through 2027
Charlotte City Council has appointed Rob Harrington to fill the mayoral vacancy created by Vi Lyles’ resignation, putting him in office for the remainder of the elected term through December 2027.
Council took final action on the appointment June 22, 2026. Harrington was sworn in July 1 at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, becoming Charlotte’s 60th mayor.
Lyles’ resignation became effective June 30. The Council action filled a vacancy; it was not a new election to choose a replacement mayor.
Appointment process
North Carolina law and Charlotte procedures required Council to appoint a qualified candidate from the same political party as Lyles to serve the balance of the term.
City Council used a finalist interview and ballot process. Harrington was selected after a second ballot from a group of five finalists: Harrington, Harold Cogdell, Carrie Cook, James Mitchell and Caleb Theodros.

Harrington’s service is an appointed term ending in December 2027, when the elected term expires. The vacancy process authorized Council to name a qualified candidate for that remaining period.

In remarks following his swearing-in, Harrington said he intends to strengthen internal collaboration, public trust and regional relationships. He also identified safety, stability and well-being as areas of focus.
The appointment determines who will lead Charlotte’s city government through the rest of the term while the city continues to confront policy questions involving growth, infrastructure, public safety and data-center regulation.
One pending policy action predates Harrington’s tenure. On June 8, Charlotte adopted a 150-day moratorium on new data-center approvals. The moratorium is scheduled to last until Nov. 5, 2026.
That measure was adopted before Harrington took the oath of office and is not an action attributed to his administration. It will, however, remain a city policy matter during his appointed service unless the city changes it.
What happens next
Harrington now serves as mayor under the Council appointment through December 2027. The cited city records do not say whether he will seek election or serve beyond that date.
