Front Street closure downtown: Memphis to shut Union–Monroe corridor through Dec. 1
Memphis TN – Front Street between Union and Monroe closes July 8 for streetscape work through Dec. 1, with phased intersection shutdowns and detours.
Downtown Memphis drivers: plan ahead. Front Street between Union Avenue and Monroe Avenue is scheduled to close starting Wednesday, July 8, 2026, and remain closed through Dec. 1, 2026 as Phase 1 of the Front Street Improvement Project begins.
Quick facts (what’s closing and when)
- Road closure: Front Street between Union Ave and Monroe Ave (expected through Dec. 1, 2026).
- What the City says the streetscape work will do: improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, including reducing Front Street from four lanes to three, installing curb bump-outs and ADA-accessible curb ramps, enhancing sidewalks, and adding landscaping.
- Additional phased intersection closures (anticipated):
- Riverside Dr / Monroe Ave: July 13 – Sept. 18
- Front St / Monroe Ave: July 23 – Sept. 25
- Front St / Union Ave: Sept. 26 – Nov. 4
How to drive around it: MPD detours (northbound vs. southbound)
Memphis Police Department says northbound and southbound lanes on Front Street between Monroe Avenue and Union Avenue will be closed through Dec. 1. MPD’s alternate-route guidance:
- Northbound traffic: Use Union Avenue to S. B. B. King Boulevard, then Monroe Avenue back to Front Street.
- Southbound traffic: Use Monroe Avenue to S. 2nd Street, then Union Avenue back to Front Street.
Closely timed disruption: sewer work starting July 13
In addition to the Front Street project, the City of Memphis says major sewer work will affect the downtown commute beginning Monday, July 13, 2026. The City says traffic control devices will be placed on GE Patterson Ave and S. Front St., and they are expected to remain until Aug. 31, 2026.
What that means for residents, parents, workers, and business customers: mid-July is when downtown travel may feel like it “gets harder,” because the sewer traffic controls start while the broader Front Street closure is already underway.
Practical tips
- Build extra buffer time for morning and evening trips—Front Street is expected to be shut for months, with additional intersection impacts rolling in during the summer and fall.
- Use MPD’s direction-specific detours so you don’t end up routed into streets that don’t connect back to your destination.
- From July 13 through the end of August, expect additional friction around GE Patterson Ave and S. Front St.
- For time-sensitive trips (appointments, school drop-offs, deliveries), double-check local traffic updates before you leave.
