Memphis Police Report 36% Drop in Part I Crime Through June
The Memphis Police Department reported a sharp decline in major crime categories through the second quarter of 2026, including 36% fewer Part I offenses year to date and an 81% homicide-clearance rate.
MPD released its update July 7, covering citywide results from April 1 through June 30. The department said the Part I decline represented more than 4,000 fewer offenses than during the same period in 2025.
The figures are reported department results. MPD did not include the raw incident totals behind each percentage in the release, and the update did not identify a single cause for the changes.
Violent and property crime both declined
Murders decreased 60% compared with the second quarter of 2025, according to MPD. Aggravated assaults declined 30%, robberies fell 38% and sexual assaults dropped 24%.
Each of the property-crime categories listed in the update also decreased. Burglaries were down 25%, larcenies fell 33% and motor-vehicle thefts declined 54%.
The department’s Part I measure covers the major violent- and property-crime categories reported in the update. Taken together, the figures describe a broad reduction across the crime categories MPD highlighted, rather than a change limited to one type of offense.
Homicide clearance improved
MPD’s Homicide Bureau reported an 81% clearance rate through the second quarter, up from 47% during the same period in 2025.
A clearance rate measures the share of homicide cases police report as cleared through investigative action. The increase is separate from the reported decline in murders: it addresses how cases were resolved, not only how many killings were recorded.
For Memphis residents, the two measures point to different parts of public safety performance. The reported offense declines describe the volume of crime, while the clearance figure describes the department’s reported progress in homicide investigations.
Recruiting and traffic enforcement
MPD also reported steps involving staffing and traffic safety. The department said 134 recruits entered its 150th Basic Recruit Session on June 1.
On June 17, MPD conducted a traffic-enforcement operation on Interstate 385 that resulted in 408 traffic stops. Officers issued citations for speeding, distracted driving, seat-belt, license, insurance, window-tint and other violations, according to the department.
The recruiting figure marks the number of people who entered the training session, not the number who have completed it or joined the department as sworn officers.
What comes next
MPD said it would continue its crime-reduction work through the second half of 2026. The department’s next efforts will therefore follow a first-half report that showed declines in both violent and property crime, along with a higher reported homicide-clearance rate.
The figures remain a department account of citywide crime trends. The percentages provide comparisons with the corresponding period in 2025, while the release does not provide the underlying totals for each individual category.
