Housing Rezoning Advances in West Neck; New Intercity Bus Route to Launch
Virginia Beach, VA – March 26, 2026 – City leaders approved senior housing at West Neck as a new intercity bus route prepares to link the Oceanfront to Richmond and beyond.
Two transportation and development decisions are shaping the conversation in Virginia Beach this week, with implications for housing supply and regional mobility.
West Neck Rezoning Approved
Virginia Beach City Council has approved a long-debated rezoning tied to the former Signature at West Neck golf course.
The plan allows 86 acres to be redeveloped into 143 age-restricted housing units for residents 55 and older, along with a redesigned nine-hole golf course. Supporters say the project, called the Preserve at West Neck, brings closure to years of legal disputes and uncertainty after the original 18-hole course shut down in 2019.
City officials have framed the move as a compromise that preserves open space while adding housing targeted to older adults — a demographic that continues to grow locally. Nearby residents had raised concerns about flooding, density and traffic during earlier stages of the proposal.
With council approval now secured, the project can move into its next planning and site development phases.
Tidewater Current Bus Service Launches April 20
On the transportation front, tickets are now on sale for the Tidewater Current, a new Virginia Breeze intercity bus route launching April 20.
The route will connect Virginia Beach and the broader Hampton Roads region with Richmond, Charlottesville and Shenandoah Valley destinations. State transit officials say the service is designed to reduce single-occupancy vehicle travel and improve access to colleges, job centers and downtown districts across the corridor.
Daily service is planned, with one-way fares listed at $35. The new line represents the first east-west expansion in the Virginia Breeze network and could offer an alternative for residents navigating I-64 congestion.
Together, the housing vote and the new bus link reflect a continued push to balance growth, infrastructure and regional connectivity in one of Virginia’s fastest-evolving cities.
