Icy Roads, School Closures and a Busy Weekend Across Worcester
Worcester, MA – March 8, 2026 – Icy roads, school closures, and a busy weekend of events mark a packed start to March in the Heart of the Commonwealth.
It has been a busy few days in Worcester, with winter weather concerns and major community events shaping the first full weekend of March.
Icy Conditions Prompt Safety Advisory
City officials urged residents to use caution Thursday night into Friday morning, March 5–6, as icy conditions created slick roads and sidewalks across Worcester. The advisory warned of hazardous travel during the evening and morning commutes.
Drivers were asked to slow down and pedestrians to watch for untreated surfaces as fluctuating temperatures led to freezing conditions in parts of the city.
Worcester Public Schools Closed Friday
As part of the region’s response to the storm system, Worcester Public Schools were closed on Friday, March 6. District leaders cited safety concerns for students and staff amid icy travel conditions.
The closure affected thousands of students citywide and canceled all school-related activities for the day. Other districts in Central Massachusetts announced delays, but Worcester opted for a full-day closure.
Polar Plunge Returns to Polar Park
Despite the wintry weather, spirits were high Saturday as participants gathered at Polar Park for the 2026 LETR Worcester Mobile Plunge. The annual fundraiser supports Special Olympics athletes across Massachusetts.
Braving the cold, participants jumped in to raise money and awareness, turning the ballpark into a celebration of inclusion and community support.
Home Show Draws Crowds Downtown
Meanwhile, the Worcester Spring Home Show filled the DCU Center from March 6–8. The three-day event brought homeowners, contractors and exhibitors together to showcase renovation ideas, home improvement services and new products.
With steady foot traffic throughout the weekend, the show added to an already active stretch in the city’s downtown.
From icy commutes to packed event halls, Worcester saw a true mix of winter challenges and community energy to kick off March.
