Meridian’s 2026 Growth Outlook Includes Costco and Hundreds of Homes

Meridian’s 2026 development outlook includes a planned Costco, hundreds of additional homes and continued growth west of the Idaho 16 extension, adding to the city’s long-term need for roads, utilities, public safety facilities and other services.

The outlook, discussed in a Jan. 29 report, describes a city still preparing for major residential and commercial expansion. The projects are part of a broader development picture rather than a single unified construction schedule, and the timing of individual projects may vary.

Costco is among the major projects

A Costco store was among the Meridian projects discussed in the 2026 outlook. A representative previously told the Meridian City Council that the store was aiming to open in August 2026.

That date is a target, not confirmation that the store has opened. The development outlook identifies the project and the planned timing, but the city’s growth discussion centers on what the project could mean for the area as Meridian continues to add homes, businesses and residents.

The Costco project stands out because it would add a major retail destination to a community already managing rapid development. Its construction and eventual operation would fit into the same infrastructure questions facing other projects: how roads, utilities and public services keep pace as new development moves forward.

West-side development may take time

City planning officials also discussed development west of the Idaho 16 extension, between Chinden Road and Ustick Road. The area is identified as a place where additional growth could occur, but a Meridian planner cautioned that some of that development may take time to materialize.

That distinction matters for residents and city planners. Land identified as a future growth area does not necessarily mean that every project is approved, under construction or scheduled to open. The outlook points to continued development pressure while acknowledging that the pace will not be the same everywhere.

The west-side expansion also raises practical questions about the sequence of growth and public investment. New homes and commercial projects can increase demand for transportation connections, water and other utilities, emergency response capacity and public facilities. Meridian’s planning work must account for those needs as development extends beyond established parts of the city.

Growth remains a central city issue
