Paterson Adds 16 Officers to Weekend Foot Patrol Program
Paterson expanded its Urban Enterprise Zone foot-patrol program on July 1, assigning 16 officers and two supervisors to commercial corridors and neighborhood business areas four days a week.
The patrols operate every Thursday through Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The deployment is intended to put more officers on foot in areas where businesses, employees, residents and visitors regularly interact.
The change gives Paterson’s commercial areas a scheduled police presence during the latter part of the week and the weekend. It is funded through New Jersey’s Urban Enterprise Zone program, which ties the public-safety effort to the state’s commercial-area support structure.
How the patrols work
The program uses 16 officers and two supervisors. Rather than relying only on vehicle patrols, the officers are assigned to walk business clusters, commercial corridors and neighborhoods in Paterson.
News 12 New Jersey reported that the expanded patrols were designed to protect local businesses and would begin July 1. The four-day schedule runs for eight hours each day, from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.
