Sullivan, Peltola clash over Iran and energy costs in Anchorage debate
U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and challenger Mary Peltola clashed over Iran, energy costs and each otherโs records during an Anchorage debate on Oct. 15, putting their competing arguments before Alaska voters ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
Sullivan said the Iran war should end soon, called for opening the Strait of Hormuz and a deal to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He argued that producing more Alaska energy was the best way to lower energy costs. Peltola said an agreement to end the war was far out of sight and argued the conflict was raising energy bills and hurting Alaskans. The candidates also repeatedly challenged each otherโs honesty and records.
Alaska Public Media, Alaskaโs News Source and KTOO presented the recorded debate. The moderator said four Senate candidates would be on the November ballot and that invitations were limited to candidates who received at least 5% of the primary vote. Sullivan and Peltola were the two candidates on the debate stage.
Alaskaโs general election is Nov. 3.
