Traffic Snarls, SWAT Response Lead Local News in Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, VA — February 17, 2026 — SWAT response, a serious crash, and a truck wedged under I-264 mark a tense and traffic-heavy start to the week.
Virginia Beach, VA — Good morning. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the city over the last couple of days.
SWAT response brings major police presence to neighborhood
A normally quiet residential area off Baccalaureate Drive and Hallowed Hall Road saw a heavy police response Sunday afternoon, with neighbors reporting more than a dozen patrol cars and multiple SWAT vehicles on scene.
Virginia Beach police were called to the 5500 block of Baccalaureate Drive just after 3:20 p.m. Sunday. Officers secured the area, used a loudspeaker to communicate with someone inside a home, and later deployed a flash-bang device before entering.
Residents described seeing a woman escorted to an ambulance and blocks of the street shut down while heavily armed officers moved door to door. Police later said the scene was made safe and that there was no continuing threat to the public. Officials have not yet released further details on what prompted the call.
Overnight crash injures man near Greenwell Road and Northampton Boulevard
In the northern end of the city, a 25-year-old man was hurt in a crash reported around 12:44 a.m. Sunday near Greenwell Road, close to Northampton Boulevard and Pleasure House Road.
Dispatch audio and early reports indicate officers were already at the scene and requested rescue crews for an injured man who was conscious and breathing. Virginia Beach EMS evaluated and treated the patient while police directed traffic around the crash site in the dark early-morning hours.
The exact number of vehicles involved, the cause of the collision, and the full extent of the man’s injuries have not yet been publicly confirmed. The scene was cleared after officers documented the crash and the roadway was deemed safe.
Truck and trailer jammed under I-264 overpass snarls London Bridge Road
Monday afternoon brought another traffic headache, this time on the south side of the city. A truck hauling equipment became stuck under the I-264 overpass along the 100 block of London Bridge Road, blocking northbound travel near the underpass.
Police shut down the affected stretch while crews assessed both the vehicle and the structure. Drivers coming off I-264 were being diverted, and backups developed as afternoon traffic tried to navigate the closure. The incident drew plenty of attention on social media from drivers who came upon the scene before it appeared on traffic maps.
Officials urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes until the truck could be freed and safety checks completed. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident so far.
Looking ahead
With multiple incidents affecting major connectors in just a couple of days, local drivers may want to allow extra time for commutes and keep a close eye on real-time traffic alerts. Police say more information will be released as investigations into the recent crash and the SWAT call-out continue.
