Virginia Beach National golf plan could add 659 housing units

Virginia Beach City Council was briefed June 16 on a proposal to restore Virginia Beach National Golf Club and add 659 housing units. The plan is still a proposal, and the city says no sale has been approved yet.

City materials say Dragas Company was selected after the RFP process. The concept keeps the course public, uses Century Golf Partners for operations, and would rebuild part of the layout with 10 existing holes retained and eight new or modified holes added.

The city presentation says the course has long-running maintenance problems, including stormwater and other repair needs. It also says the operator’s current term expires in December 2026, which adds urgency to the review.

The proposal calls for the developer to buy the property for $17.94 million. It also includes $4.3 million in city infrastructure work, plus other public and private funding for golf-course improvements and site work. City materials estimate about $3.4 million in new annual tax revenue after stabilization.

What happens next matters most. WHRO reported that a public hearing is scheduled for July 7 and that City Council could vote July 14. If the plan advances, residents near Tournament Drive and Princess Anne Road could see traffic, housing, and access changes tied to the site.
