Virginia Beach Prepares for Winter Storm; City Facilities Closed January 31 and February 1
Virginia Beach, VA — January 31, 2026 — City facilities, including recreation centers, libraries, and museums, are closed this weekend due to anticipated winter weather.
City Facilities Closed Due to Winter Storm
Virginia Beach has closed all city facilities, including recreation centers, libraries, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and Virginia Beach History Museums, on January 31 and February 1 in anticipation of a winter storm. Residents are advised to stay indoors and limit travel during this period.
Town Center Garages Available for Parking
To assist residents needing to move vehicles out of flood-prone areas, four municipal garages at Town Center are available starting Friday evening. Parking is free, but the public is asked to avoid reserved spaces, as these are leased by residents, and towing will be enforced. Be aware that if garages lose power, lighting and elevators will not be operable.
Winter Weather Preparedness Tips
Residents are encouraged to sign up for VBAlert, the city’s emergency alert system, to receive timely updates. Additional preparedness tips include winterizing pipes, preparing vehicles for winter conditions, and keeping electronic devices fully charged in case of power outages. For more information, visit the city’s official website or call 311.
City’s Response to Winter Weather
The city’s Public Works and Parks & Recreation departments are activating snow removal plans and deploying crews to maintain roadways and facilities. Virginia Beach has over 3,400 lane miles of streets, with priority given to routes with critical infrastructure. Emergency Management is coordinating with local and state partners to ensure needed resources are available and continually monitoring conditions.
