Nevada payroll jobs set record as labor force shrinks
Nevadaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in September, while seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment reached a record 1,620,200 jobs. At the same time, the stateโs seasonally adjusted labor force declined by 5,343 people from August, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitationโs report issued Oct. 15.
The measures count different things: payroll employment counts jobs, while the unemployment rate and resident-employment figures describe people. The record payroll total therefore does not mean that more Nevada residents were employed than in August.
The unemployment rate was down 0.1 percentage point from 4.8% in August and 0.5 percentage point from 5.2% in September 2025. DETR said 4.7% was the lowest rate since February 2020. Seasonally adjusted payroll employment increased by 1,300 jobs from August and by 25,300 jobs, or 1.6%, from a year earlier.
Jobs and resident counts diverged
The seasonally adjusted labor force stood at 1,670,292 people, down 8,156 from September 2025 as well as down from August. It included 1,591,464 employed people and 78,828 unemployed people. From August, the employed count fell by 3,052 and the unemployed count by 2,291. DETR also reported a seasonally adjusted labor-force participation rate of 62.3%.
| Seasonally adjusted measure | September 2026 | Change from August |
|---|---|---|
| Unemployment rate | 4.7% | Down 0.1 percentage point |
| Nonfarm payroll employment | 1,620,200 jobs | Up 1,300 jobs |
| Labor force | 1,670,292 people | Down 5,343 people |
| Employed residents | 1,591,464 people | Down 3,052 people |
The reported changes are separate movements in different labor-market measures; they do not establish that the shrinking labor force caused the unemployment rate to fall.
Seasonally adjusted industry payroll changes varied from August. Leisure and hospitality added 2,700 jobs, and construction added 500. Professional and business services lost 800 jobs, while trade, transportation and utilities lost 500.
Metro payroll changes and unemployment claims
Seasonally adjusted payroll employment in the Las Vegas metropolitan area rose by 1,500 jobs from August; Reno-Sparks gained 1,000, while Carson City was unchanged. Compared with September 2025, Las Vegas payroll employment was up 21,800 jobs and Reno-Sparks was up 5,000, while Carson City was down 400.
Nevada recorded 11,106 initial unemployment-insurance claims in September. That was 386, or 3.4%, fewer than the 11,492 claims in August, but more than the 10,921 filed in September 2025.
DETRโs release schedule lists Oct. 20, 2026, for the September sub-state labor-market report and Nov. 19 for the October statewide report. Those are scheduled release dates.
