Anchorage daily local brief: sentencing, winter milestone, and a small quake
Anchorage, AK – March 3, 2026 – A major sentence in a 2018 double-shooting case, a notable winter milestone, and a small quake northwest of town.
Anchorage is getting a mix of big-court-news, lingering winter talk, and a routine-but-worth-noting seismic blip.
1) 88-year prison sentence in 2018 shootings
A judge handed down a composite 88-year sentence to Dashawn Street, 32, for a murder and an attempted murder tied to two separate shootings on the night of Sept. 28–29, 2018. Prosecutors said one shooting happened outside a food truck and left a man with life-threatening injuries who ultimately survived after emergency surgery. Less than two hours later, authorities said Street shot and killed 24-year-old Fa’avae Seau during an interaction at a Mountain View apartment building.
Investigators also described Street’s arrest days later in Fairview after he allegedly rammed his vehicle into multiple police vehicles. A jury convicted him in April 2025, and the sentencing wraps up a case that has lingered for years for victims’ families and neighbors.
2) Winter closes with a notable milestone for Anchorage
Meteorological winter ended March 1, and forecasters say the season stands out locally: Anchorage logged its coldest winter since the 2010–2011 season. Even with spring on the calendar, the outlook still favors stretches of cold air, and March and April can remain active for snow chances in Southcentral.
The practical takeaway: mornings can stay slick and cold even when afternoons start nudging warmer, so it’s still a good week for extra commute time and a quick check of neighborhood conditions.
3) Small quake northwest of town
The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded a magnitude 1.8 earthquake about 26 miles northwest of Anchorage early March 1. Events of this size are often too small to notice, but they’re a helpful reminder that Southcentral Alaska is active year-round. If you haven’t looked at your basics lately, this is a low-stress nudge to make sure flashlights, batteries, and a small first-aid kit are easy to find.
