Anchorage Update: Homeless Camps Claim, Iditarod Energy, and a Busy Weekend Downtown
Anchorage, AK – March 15, 2026 – City leaders report no major homeless camps, the Iditarod continues, and libraries host packed weekend events.
Anchorage is heading into the second half of March with a mix of civic updates, sled dog excitement, and community events filling the weekend calendar.
Assembly Chair: No Large Homeless Encampments
At the March 3 regular Assembly meeting, Assembly Chair Christopher Constant said Anchorage currently has no large-scale homeless encampments for the first time in years. The update comes after months of coordinated efforts between the city and state agencies to clear major sites and connect people with shelter and services.
City leaders say work continues along key corridors and public rights of way, with outreach teams focused on preventing new large camps from forming. The announcement marks a notable shift in a long-running public concern and is likely to remain a central topic as spring approaches.
Iditarod Brings Buzz to Downtown
The 54th annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is now underway after its ceremonial start in Anchorage on March 7. Downtown streets recently filled with teams, handlers and spectators as mushers began their journey north.
This year’s race features dozens of competitors and follows the northern route. While the action has moved out onto the trail, the energy from the kickoff continues to ripple through local businesses and visitors enjoying the late-winter spotlight on Anchorage.
Libraries See Strong Weekend Turnout
Anchorage Public Library branches were busy over the weekend with community-focused programming. Muldoon Library hosted Senior Saturday, offering one-on-one help with technology and community resources. The Chugiak-Eagle River branch welcomed residents for free AARP Tax-Aide assistance.
Family storytimes and youth programs also drew steady participation, a reminder that even in the final stretch of winter, Anchorage residents are staying connected and engaged indoors.
