Anchorage’s Record Snowfall and Upcoming Craft Brew Festival
Record Snowfall in Anchorage
Anchorage has set a new January snowfall record, with over 10 inches of snow from a recent storm, bringing the monthly total to 39.7 inches. This surpasses the previous record of 39.6 inches set in 2000. The heavy snowfall led to early school dismissals and significant traffic disruptions, including 99 vehicles in distress and 36 collisions, 12 of which involved injuries. The National Weather Service attributes the increased snowfall to warming trends in Alaska, which have added 5 to 6 degrees to average January temperatures, allowing for more moisture and thus more snow. Despite clearing streets just after a previous storm, city plow crews mobilized once again, with updates and GPS tracking available online. Officials urge drivers to exercise caution, as continued snowfall before the end of the month is still possible.
