Fresh Snow, Iditarod Cheers and Capitol Debates Lead Anchorage Headlines
Anchorage, AK – March 10, 2026 – Fresh snow boosts Iditarod start, colder temps grip city, and lawmakers weigh new civics requirement.
Anchorage woke up Tuesday with winter firmly in control and the city still buzzing from a busy weekend.
Iditarod Returns in Full Form
Downtown Anchorage saw a true return to form Saturday as the 54th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicked off with its ceremonial start. After last year’s snow shortages forced changes, more than half a foot of fresh snow helped create classic race conditions.
Thirty-seven teams mushed through city streets lined with cheering crowds before heading north for the official restart in Willow. The race is back on its traditional northern route, giving fans and mushers alike a much more familiar experience.
Nearly 8 Inches of Weekend Snow
The city officially recorded 7.9 inches of snow over the weekend, pushing Anchorage’s seasonal total to just under 75 inches. That puts snowfall close to a typical full-season average.
Colder air has settled in behind the storm. Forecasters say daytime highs will run 15 to 20 degrees below normal this week, with subzero overnight lows possible in colder spots around Southcentral. Gusty winds through gaps and along Turnagain Arm may add to the chill.
Lawmakers Consider Civics Requirement
At the state level, lawmakers are weighing a proposal that would make civics education a requirement for Alaska high school students. Supporters say the change would better prepare students to understand government and civic engagement.
The discussion comes as students across Anchorage continue the spring semester and as local attention remains split between education funding debates and other budget priorities.
Hunting Authority Debate Resurfaces
Meanwhile, federal and state authority over hunting and trapping on national preserve lands is again in focus. The Trump administration is moving to restore more state control, a shift that could affect subsistence users and wildlife management policies across Alaska.
For Anchorage residents, the issue ties directly to long-running conversations about access, conservation and local control.
