Iditarod Launches, Winter Storms Hit, and Arena Audit Raises Concerns
Anchorage, AK – March 8, 2026 – The Iditarod kicks off downtown as storms sweep Southcentral and a city audit flags major arena contract issues.
Iditarod Takes Over Downtown
Anchorage officially kicked off the 54th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Saturday, March 7, with the ceremonial start downtown. Teams of barking huskies and bundled-up mushers drew large crowds along Fourth Avenue despite snowy conditions.
This year’s race begins on the northern route, and organizers say recent snowfall helped improve trail conditions compared to last year’s thin cover. Festivities stretched from downtown to the Campbell Tract area, giving families plenty of chances to cheer on their favorite teams before they head west.
Heavy Snow and High Winds Across Southcentral
Just as the race began, a strong storm system moved into Southcentral Alaska. The National Weather Service issued winter weather alerts Friday as snow, gusty winds and areas of mixed precipitation swept through Anchorage and surrounding communities.
Forecasters reported increasing winds and periods of heavier snowfall, with difficult travel conditions at times. Officials urged drivers to slow down and check road updates before heading out, especially through Turnagain Arm and higher elevations where winds were strongest.
City Audit Finds Arena Contract Problems
In municipal news, a recent audit found significant contract violations tied to the private operator managing several city-owned hockey arenas. The review concluded that more than $500,000 is owed to the Municipality of Anchorage.
The arenas, central to Anchorage’s hockey community, have faced years of financial strain and operational challenges. City officials say the findings could prompt corrective action as they review oversight and compliance measures.
With major community events underway and winter weather still very much in play, it has been a busy start to March for Alaska’s largest city.
