Memphis daily local headlines for March 1: officer-shooting manhunt, Castalia Mart shooting, Summer Ave water main break
Memphis, TN – March 1, 2026 – Officer shooting manhunt continues, two critical in Castalia shooting, and a Summer Ave water-main break update.
Memphis heads into the first Sunday of March with a heavy public-safety focus, plus a couple of neighborhood updates worth keeping on your radar.
1) Officer shooting: manhunt and Blue Alert
Authorities say a Memphis police officer was critically injured during a Thursday night incident in Parkway Village. State and federal partners say the suspected shooter, Danell Maxwell, 40, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
A Blue Alert was issued statewide, and officials say an attempted first-degree murder warrant has been obtained. Federal officials also say the suspect was added to the Tennessee Most Wanted list and that a reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
2) Castalia convenience store shooting leaves two critical
Police responded Saturday afternoon to a shooting at Castalia Mart near Boyle Avenue. Investigators said two people, a woman and a man, were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
As in many weekend shootings, early details are limited while detectives work the scene and look for witnesses. Tips can be routed through CrimeStoppers, according to police.
3) Summer Avenue water main break
Memphis Light, Gas and Water reported a water main break on Summer Avenue Saturday evening and said crews were investigating and working toward repairs. Drivers should be ready for possible lane impacts and short-notice detours if crews need to dig in.
4) Guns to Gardens event returns
Evergreen Presbyterian Church hosted another Guns to Gardens safe-surrender event on Saturday, collecting firearms and melting them down on site. Organizers say the scrap metal will be turned into garden tools and artwork, continuing a program that has gathered more than 130 guns over the past two years.
5) On the calendar: Memphis basketball heads to East Carolina
The University of Memphis men’s team is scheduled to play at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon as the regular season winds down. The matchup is part of a late-season push for conference tournament positioning.
