Storm Threats, Drug Operation and Tournament Play Lead Memphis Headlines
Memphis, TN – March 12, 2026 – Storm threats, a major drug bust, tournament hoops and a late-night burglary lead today’s local headlines.
Memphis is wrapping up a busy stretch of weather, public safety activity and postseason basketball.
Storms Sweep Through the Mid-South
A line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved through the Memphis area this week, prompting a Weather Impact Alert and raising concerns about damaging winds, hail and isolated flooding.
Forecasters said the greatest impact came during the afternoon and evening hours on March 9 and March 11, as a cold front pushed across the region. While the tornado risk remained low, heavy rain and gusty winds created hazardous driving conditions in parts of the city.
Conditions have since improved, but the soggy start to the week was a reminder that spring weather is arriving with force.
MPD Concludes Operation HUSH
On March 11, the Memphis Police Department announced the conclusion of Operation HUSH, a lengthy undercover investigation targeting street-level narcotics sales across the city.
The Organized Crime Unit wrapped up the operation after months of investigative work focused on disrupting drug distribution networks. Police have not yet released full totals connected to the sweep, but officials describe the effort as a significant step in ongoing crime reduction strategies.
The announcement comes as city leaders continue emphasizing enforcement and targeted operations in high-crime areas.
Tigers Open AAC Tournament Play
The Memphis Tigers tipped off postseason action Wednesday night in the American Athletic Conference tournament in Birmingham.
Memphis entered the matchup against Tulane with an even conference record and hopes of building momentum in March. The tournament runs through March 15, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
For fans, it is another opportunity to see whether the Tigers can turn a challenging regular season into a late surge.
Late-Night Burglary in Southeast Memphis
Officers also responded to a burglary call March 10 at a business in the 6700 block of Winchester Road. The incident was reported just before 11 p.m.
Investigators are continuing to gather details. No additional information about suspects or arrests has been released.
