Teen fatally shot in apparent mishandling of firearm

Arlington police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old boy who was shot while a group of juveniles were handling a firearm inside a home near West Arkansas Lane and Little Road. Officers responded late Friday night and found the teen with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

Investigators say preliminary evidence indicates several juveniles gained access to a gun in the home and were reportedly pointing it at one another when it went off. The teen believed to have pulled the trigger has been taken into custody on a manslaughter charge and transported to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center. Police say the case remains under active investigation and are using the incident to renew calls for secure firearm storage in homes with children.

Java House Grand Prix to turn Entertainment District into race weekend festival

Arlington’s Entertainment District is gearing up for the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, an NTT INDYCAR SERIES weekend that organizers say will feel more like a citywide festival than a single race. The event, scheduled for March 13–15, will bring high-speed racing to a 2.5-mile course woven through the city’s sports corridor.

Plans call for three days of programming, including on-track sessions, live music, interactive sponsor zones and family attractions. Officials highlight that the event is designed for both dedicated race fans and casual visitors, with concerts and many fan experiences included with general admission. With large crowds expected, residents are being encouraged to plan ahead for traffic and parking impacts in the Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium area.

College baseball showcase keeps Globe Life Field buzzing

Globe Life Field continues to draw national attention this weekend as college baseball powers converge for the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series. The tournament, running February 20–22, features matchups between top-ranked programs and gives local fans an early-season preview of high-level play before the Texas Rangers take the field later this spring.

The series is one of several back-to-back events filling the ballpark calendar, with another tournament weekend set for February 27–March 1. Tourism and business groups say these events are helping sustain hotel, restaurant and retail traffic in the Entertainment District during the Rangers’ offseason.

Arlington-based contractors, service providers and product vendors are being invited to connect directly with city departments at a free Reverse Trade Show next month. The event is set for March 4 at the Bob Duncan Center and is designed to help local businesses learn how to compete for city contracts.

Instead of traditional vendor booths, the format brings city staff from departments like public works, parks and general services to the floor so business owners can walk from table to table, ask questions and share capability statements. City procurement staff say they hope the event will broaden the pool of local suppliers and make it easier for small and emerging businesses to tap into municipal purchasing opportunities.

Arlington marks 150th anniversary with history-focused programming

As Arlington celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, the city is rolling out new stories and exhibits that highlight lesser-known pieces of local history. Recent features have spotlighted the first Black police officer to serve in Arlington in the late 1960s and a new documentary, ‘Echoes from The Hill,’ which explores a historic neighborhood and its legacy.

Additional sesquicentennial events are planned in the months ahead, including library programs, neighborhood projects and landmark designations for historic properties. City leaders say the anniversary is an opportunity not only to look back at Arlington’s growth, but also to encourage residents to take part in shaping the community’s next chapter.
