Killeen-Area Gas Falls to $3.61 While Diesel Holds Above $5

Regular gasoline in the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metro averaged $3.612 per gallon on August 1, 2026, while diesel averaged $5.077, according to the latest AAA price check. The movements are different: gasoline is lower than it was yesterday and last week, while diesel is down slightly from the prior day but remains higher across the week, month and year comparisons.

Gas prices are lower short term, but still above older averages

The metro’s regular-gas average fell 0.7 cents from $3.619 on July 31. It was also 13.0 cents below the week-ago average of $3.742.

That short-term relief does not mean gasoline has returned to lower levels overall. The August 1 average was 38.3 cents higher than the month-ago average of $3.229 and 88.9 cents above the year-ago average of $2.723.

For Killeen-area commuters and military households, the daily and weekly declines may provide modest relief at the pump. The longer comparisons show that fuel remains substantially more expensive than it was a month ago and a year ago.

Diesel dips for one day but remains above $5

Diesel averaged $5.077 per gallon, down 1.6 cents from the previous day’s $5.093 average. The broader trend is less favorable for diesel users: the current average is 18.0 cents higher than a week ago, 93.9 cents higher than a month ago and $1.778 higher than a year ago.

That matters most for contractors, delivery operators, farmers, freight companies and service businesses that use diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Higher diesel costs can also become an operating expense for restaurants and other businesses that depend on deliveries, although the AAA figures alone do not document how any particular Killeen business is responding.

Metro averages are not station prices

AAA’s figures cover the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metro and are not the price at every station in Killeen. Individual pumps can be higher or lower depending on location, competition, fuel grade, loyalty programs and when the station last updated its price.

AAA’s statewide Texas average on August 1 was also $3.612 for regular gasoline, while the national average was $4.101. The U.S. Energy Information Administration and Associated Press provide broader fuel-market context, but those statewide and national figures should not be substituted for the local metro averages.

For weekend travelers, the current numbers point to a mixed picture: gasoline costs have eased from the previous day and week, but remain well above older comparison points, while diesel is still above $5 despite its small daily decline.
