Killeen Road Work Brings Jasper Drive Lanes, Two Closures

Killeen has three separate roadway work zones beginning or continuing this week, affecting Jasper Drive, Freda Drive and Pennington Avenue. Drivers, residents, delivery operators and nearby businesses should watch posted traffic controls and allow extra time for trips through the affected areas.

Jasper Drive resurfacing runs through August 5

The City of Killeen began milling and overlay work on Jasper Drive Monday, July 27. The project covers Jasper Drive between Trimmier Road and Old FM 440.

Work is scheduled on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Wednesday, August 5, weather permitting. The city notice says motorists may encounter lane closures while crews work in the corridor.

The listed dates are the scheduled work period, not a guarantee that the project will finish on time. Weather and construction conditions may affect the schedule.

Freda Drive scheduled to close to through traffic

Freda Drive between Trimmier Road and Catherine Drive is scheduled to close to through traffic Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29. The closure hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The city identified road improvements as the purpose of the work. The notice describes a restriction on through traffic; it does not establish that every form of access to properties along the corridor will be blocked. Drivers should follow signs and traffic-control directions in the field.

Pennington Avenue closure continues into August

Pennington Avenue at Michael Drive is scheduled to remain closed from Tuesday, July 28, through Friday, August 14. The closure is for installation of a concrete valley gutter.

This work zone has a different schedule and purpose from the Jasper Drive resurfacing and Freda Drive road improvements. Motorists should not assume that traffic controls or access arrangements are the same at all three locations.

What Killeen drivers should expect

The projects create separate traffic impacts in different parts of Killeen during the same period. Jasper Drive may have weekday lane closures between Trimmier Road and Old FM 440, while Freda Drive is scheduled to be closed to through traffic during daytime work hours on July 28-29. Pennington Avenue at Michael Drive is scheduled to remain closed through August 14.

Commuters and delivery drivers should build extra time into trips near the work zones. Nearby residents and businesses should watch for posted signs, barricades and other traffic-control devices, and should rely on those instructions rather than assuming a route will remain open.

Schedules may change because of weather or construction progress. The City of Killeen’s roadway alerts and notices should control in the field as work proceeds.
